Continuing Professor Edward Said's Conversations on Zionism, Imperialism, and Corruption
Geopolitics again — 20 years ago the world lost one of the most genuine geopolitical and philosophical scholars. Today, we must continue the vital conversations he fought for in Western discourse.
Starvation, torture, extrajudicial assassination, collective punishment, deprivation of healthcare, force transfer of population, land expropriation, and discrimination are the evils that Edward Said fought against before his natural death in 2003. Educated in the most respected institutions of the Western canon (when that still meant something), Professor Said’s roots were in Jerusalem, Palestine, where he was born in 1935.
Very few immigrants to the United States maintain the type of love and dedication to their homeland as Professor Said did. I suspect that has much to do with the forced expulsion of the Palestinian people as refugees as opposed to the active and voluntary migration of immigrants. In that sense, the focus of much of his work focused not solely on Palestine but on the universality of human rights in general. With a “worldly awareness,” he spoke truth to power on behalf of the peoples of Iraq, Afghanistan, and non-Jewish Israeli citizens.
The American Military Industrial Complex, as it is commonly referred to, would be more accurately named the Zionist Military Industrial Complex, as the actual American influence was successfully dominated during the Wilson administration in the early 1900’s, as the Zionists so brazenly boasted in their own publications.
This leads me to my next point — a few weeks ago I posted a poem with the subtitle “let them kill each other if they want.” This in no way expressed the actual sentiment I felt, and still feel. What I should have explained was that there were employees of the Palestinian Authority (PA) with Zionist associations. Therefore, supporting the Palestinian government - or posting #FreePalestine on social media - is not an effective reproach to the illegitimate Israeli state.
If you read some of the previously mentioned Zionist literature regarding the infiltration of the American government which eventually allowed for the ratification of the Balfour Declaration, you will understand more perfectly the mechanism by which the PA was corrupted. This literature, most of which was written prior to the Second World War, is so radically morally depraved that, for now, I lack the literary capacity to paraphrase it appropriately. I hope to someday possess such linguistic finesse.
Until then, for those who lack the time and motivation to read through dozens of pages of annoying academic articles, I will stick to concepts admittedly better explained by Dr. Said, such as the endless war machine of modern imperialism, the universality of the appeal of human rights, and the exhalation of truth as an action. Equally important was Said’s opposition to antagonism as a political strategy, which bears a striking resemblance to the sentiments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who also possessed not only a mastery of language but a deep and foundational decency and respect for humans - all humans - no matter what.
In both cases, I posit that the crux of their power stems from their unshakable faith and trust in the indomitable strength of the human will. It is the fear of this Will which, outside of financial incentives, motivates imperialist militarism which seeks not only to plunder subjugated lands of resources but also to crush the will of its victims. It is in this fact that hope for the future can be found.
The most pathetic man in any room is the tyrant. This is always the case, and his weakness is always the largest on display, even as he condemns the peasants of his own kingdom to death - especially then. The Zionist/American military might is one characterized by an obvious and embarrassing incompetence, cowardice, and laziness; they do not fight, they only bomb. When forced to fight, American Israeli soldiers can be relied upon to fail miserably at their own expense (i.e. Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, etc.).
Western leaders are psychotically engaged to a suicidal militarism that reflects not the interests of its own citizens or soldiers but of a select global Zionist elite. To my fellow US citizens, you have a responsibility and obligation to be aware - and will be held accountable when the time comes - that when you wave the American flag, it is not your flag you’re waving.
