Fireworks Over Finland: Is NATO Expansion Worth the Risk?
The Implications of Finland's Entry into NATO and It's Impact on U.S. Military Expansion
Finland completed it’s accession to NATO one month ago, but the United States has been preparing to establish a military presence in the country for years. Negotiations regarding a defense cooperation agreement (DCA) between Finland and the U.S. started as early as last fall and continued in Helsinki last week. The agreement would enable an increased deployment of American armed forces and the establishment of military infrastructure in Finland.
It’s hard to view Washington’s actions as anything less than provocative considering Vladimir Putin’s firm opposition to NATO encroachment on Russian borders. The Russian government has repeatedly expressed their understanding of the current conflict as being existentially crucial to their national survival. If the powers that be valued human life as they claim, especially in Ukraine, would they be taking every opportunity to provoke and proliferate further conflict as they appear to be now? Such behavior is deeply concerning. Considering the potential nuclear consequences, Washington's seemingly reckless behavior hints at a pathological desire for destruction with roots much deeper than the simple satisfaction of financial interests.
Missile systems, fighter jets, and rockets, oh my! But while lions may roam the savannah and tigers may prowl the jungle, in Washington, the sale of missile systems, fighter jets, and rockets to Finland is making some individuals very rich. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Political-Military Affairs reports active cases totaling roughly $13.6 billion in sales with the Finnish government.
These sales began to increase in frequency long before the start of the conflict in 2022. One can't help but wonder if the United States has been laying the groundwork for this type of conflict ever since their involvement in the 2014 coup in Kiev. But of course, it would be absurd to suggest that the US government would ever start a war for financial or imperialistic gain. Such indiscriminate slaughter and evil would only be possible for the likes of Vladimir Putin, the manifestation of Darkness himself.
Isn't that right, citizen?
